  3. Group exhibition "Blocker"!

  4. On March 10 we launch our 14th issue "Blocker" at gallery "Alma". Exhibition dates: March 10 - March 31.

"We select information by blocking and filtering it. It is a choice not to wear famous brand clothing, to decline to consume alcohol, to refuse to believe in God or what we hear on the radio news. There are things that it is better not to know so we can sleep more peacefully. By blocking something, we create more space for information about things we are really interested in. In contrast, too much blocking results in blockages, which outwardly manifest themselves as short-circuits."

  5. "Hydra Head" zine open call!

  6. Popper Publishing is launching a new project – series of zines titled “Ķekargalvis / Hydra Head”. The name comes from Latvian folk tale about Kurbads – he throws himself into a crucial battle with a dragon. It is a mighty challenge, where once a head is cut off, three new ones appear. Because of this arithmetic progression Kurbads sarcastically called the dragon “Ķekargalvis” which literary means a bunch of heads. “Hydra Head”is an analogue creature in Greek mythology. We use this comparison of head multiplication, aligning it with the printer operation and message copying. More info here!

  9. Riga Zine Fest 2016 review!

  10. This is first zine festival in Latvia, Riga (at Ģertrūdes street Theatre), dedicated to the promotion of informal publishing, diversification of public opinion and cultural experience, development of illustration and individual freedom of expression.

Festival is organised by the artist collective Popper. Popper Publishing is founded in 2012 and since then has been active in many different fields such as exhibition, event curating, zine and book publishing, focusing on graphic and contemporary art, drawing, illustration, graffiti and photography.

  11. The first ever Riga Zine Fest has started!

  12. On 12 May, an exhibition of works by the artists group 'Akvārijs' at the Kalnciema Quarter gallery marked the beginning of the Riga Zine Fest, which will continue through to 12 June.

This is not only the first ever zine festival to be held in Latvia, but a major event dedicated to encouraging informal publishing in Latvia, the diversity of public thought and cultural experience, illustrations for cultural development and freedom of creative expression.

The festival offers the public the chance to visit a range of exhibitions at various venues around Riga, reaching a culmination on 27 May with the opening of a three day exhibition of zines and works of art at the Ģertrūdes Street Theatre (participants include Jenni Rope, Dunja Jankovich and Līva Rutmane), accompanied by talks, encounters with artists and musical performances.

Among the exhibits on view in the zine exhibition will be zines created especially for the festival by Latvian artists, works conceived by competition participants, 1980s and 1990s Latvian underground music zines from the collection of Jānis Daugavietis, zines published by foreign publishers including Re:Surgo!, Finerats, Extrapool, Napa Books and Editions FP&CF, as well as other publications.

One of the festival’s tasks is to introduce the public to the history of the zine movement globally and in Latvia, to which end the Ģertrūdes Street Theatre will be hosting talks on 29 May by philosopher Normunds Kozlovs on 'Self-Ghettoization' and scientist Jānis Daugavietis on 'The Unwritten History of Latvian Zines'

Finnish artist and one of the founders of Napa Books, Jenni Rope and Croatian artist Dunja Jankovic will be also on hand to talk about the latest trends in Europe in the realm of independent publishing and artistic expression.

The talks and exhibitions will be enriched by musical performances by Džūka Čūska, OhmtekTV Maskava, Toms Auniņš, Viestarts Gailītis and Ernests Ansons, and, last but not least, Laika Jona

    * More often than not, a zine (an abbreviation of the English word “magazine”) is a limited circulation small format magazine self-published by the author of its contents. Oftentimes, the subjects included in these small magazines don’t conform to the standards demanded by the traditional media. Despite this, in recent years, all over the world, zines of all kinds have developed to the point where they have acquired a professional status, resulting in their sale in large numbers in bookstores  and distribution online. It is clearly an increasingly popular format.

  13. RZF Open Call!

  14. Get involved in creating a zine culture in Latvia! Submit your zine by 30 April 2016 and participate in the first Riga Zine festival (RZF)!

    What is a zine?

A zine (an abbreviation of "magazine") is most commonly a small-format self-published low circulation magazine. The possibilities for its content are quite wide. It can consist of articles on politics, poetry, comics, photographs, hand-drawn and computer-generated drawings, etc.

Oftentimes, the themes of zines do not conform to the standards required by the traditional media. Despite this, in recent years the number of zines globally has grown exponentially. They are sold in large quantities and distributed both in bookstores and online. The zine format has become increasingly popular.

Submission: the contents can be approached very freely - there are no thematic and stylistic restrictions. Feel free to create whatever you like; be it a narrative, abstract, graphic, sequential series of images, or collages, digital or analog images.

The most popular zine format is A5, because pages can be printed on A4 sheets, folded in half and stapled or bound. Nevertheless, there are no limitations in terms of format. Number of pages - 10 and above.

The zine can be printed in digital print, screen print or any other graphic technique, propagated by Xerox or it can be a hand-drawn single copy.

Bring your work to the "Bolderāja" bookstore (Avotu Street 29) or send it to our postal address: Lāčplēša Street 26-21, Rīga, LV-1011. Do not forget to include your name, surname and e-mail address to which we will send the results.

Prizes: the first place winner in response to this open call will get Popper Publishing's support in publishing the zine and an opportunity to participate in other international festivals dedicated to zines.

The exhibition: the winners of the competition will be announced on 27 May 2016, at the opening exhibition of RZF. The best works in the competition will also be displayed there.

  15. "Bad Trip" zine by Maija Kurševa!

  16. Drawing series about one unplesant adventure. Story below written by Emīls Rode after my recount of this event.

"Already for a couple of weeks Maija had been feeling miserable. One day a friend crawled into her room and gave her an almost-empty little bottle of LSD. A few nights later, there was a huge party with lots of people at Maija’s flat. After the guests were gone, she and her roommate drank the refrigerator empty, and the little bottle too. All night long Maija rolled on the floor while enjoying Dvorak’s music. When the sun came up, she ventured into the street. People looked creepy and frightening. Maija escaped into a park. For a long time she tried to recover a relationship with the outside world, but only burst into tears. With great difficulty, Maija reached her home and switched off. When she awoke, her face was puffy."

Format: 15x21 cm, full colour, 28 pages, stiched binding, screen printed cover, English/Latvian.                    Artzine by Maija Kurševa "Bad Trip" now avaible in our online store.
