Popper Publishing is launching a new project – series of zines titled “Ķekargalvis / Hydra Head”. The name comes from Latvian folk tale about Kurbads – he throws himself into a crucial battle with a dragon. It is a mighty challenge, where once a head is cut off, three new ones appear. Because of this arithmetic progression Kurbads sarcastically called the dragon “Ķekargalvis” which literary means a bunch of heads. “Hydra Head” is an analogue creature in Greek mythology. We use this comparison of head multiplication, aligning it with the printer operation and message copying.

Artists and text authors are welcomed to take a part in the making of this zine! Our first “Ķekarglavis/Hydra Head” topic is “Life Explained”.

“Life explained” correlates with instructional videos and articles you can find over internet, where their aim is to most efficiently explain specific situations and come up with solutions. Theme can be widely interpreted – personal experience, fictional situations, absurd situations. Field studies in visual and textual form will finally explain life to us!

Zine series "Ķekargalvis/Hydra Head“ will be published few times a year. Each issue will have a different theme, and its content will be created from open call submissions. Inside pages of the zine will be printed in Riso printing technique in one colour (issue number 1 – blue) and covers will be printed in silkscreen technique.
